That’s the question at the heart of this tender and insightful novel by Meg Donohue. The answer is a resounding yes. The magic of ordinary days is based on the author’s own life, and her deeply moving story will stay with you long after you finish the book.
Donohue tells the story of her childhood in San Francisco in the 1970s. She and her younger brother, John, grow up in a loving home with their parents, who are always there for them. But as they grow older, they begin to realize that their parents are struggling with their own problems.
Despite the challenges their family faces, Donohue and John find happiness in the everyday moments. They spend hours playing in the backyard, making up games and pretending they’re explorers or superheroes. They ride their bikes all over the city, taking in the sights and sounds of their neighborhood. And they fall in love with the magic of ordinary days.
