Cohen recorded the album in the last months of his life, and it is clear that he was aware of his mortality. The album’s title track is a eulogy for his own death, in which he sings, “I’m ready, my lord.”
Many of the songs on the album are about death and loss. “Treaty,” for example, is about the end of a love affair, and “Leaving …
