A browser is a computer program that allows users to access and browse the World Wide Web. Browsers use the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to request and display webpages from web servers.
The first web browser, called WorldWideWeb, was developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990. It was a text-based browser that ran on the NeXTSTEP operating system. In 1991, Berners-Lee released the source code for WorldWideWeb and encouraged others to develop their own browsers.
