In the early days of optical media, there were just two formats to choose from: CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. But with the advent of high-definition video and ever-larger files sizes, a new format was needed to store all that data. So in 2006, the Blu-ray Disc format was born.
Blu-ray Discs can hold up to 25 gigabytes of data, compared to just 4.7 gigabytes on a standard DVD. They can also handle high-definition video, with resolutions up to 1080p. But because Blu-ray Discs are more expensive to produce, they tend to be more expensive to buy.
