E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of Elliott (played by Henry Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed “E.T.”, who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his family help E.T. return home while avoiding the government agents who are searching for him.

The film was a critical and financial success, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time until it was surpassed by Jurassic Park in 1993. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won four, including Best Director for Spielberg.
