Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service, shipped its first DVD on August 11, 1998. The DVD, which was rented from the company’s first distribution center in Scotts Valley, California, was a copy of the action film “The Mask of Zorro.”

Netflix, which was founded in 1997, initially operated as a DVD-by-mail rental service. Customers could subscribe to the service, select a movie or TV show to watch, and receive the DVD in the mail.
