A DVD player is a device that plays digital video discs, encoded in MPEG-2, MPEG-4, or DivX format. DVD players are also capable of playing audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs.
DVD players were first sold in 1997 in Japan. In late 1998, they became available in the United States, Europe, and other regions of the world.
DVD players are available in two formats: Region 1 format, which is for the Americas, and Region 2 format, which is for all other regions of the world.
