Since 2009, the Hubble Space Telescope has been in a state of safe mode due to a computer failure. On October 5, 2009, one of the three gyroscopes used to orient the telescope failed. This left the telescope unable to point accurately at objects in space, and it was placed in safe mode.
In 2013, attempts were made to fix the computer, but they were unsuccessful. The computer still failed to respond to commands, and it was again placed in safe mode.
