The web has come to refer to a variety of different things in computer culture. Originally, it referred to the World Wide Web, a global collection of websites. More recently, it has come to refer to the internet as a whole, and to individual websites themselves.

The World Wide Web, or WWW, was created in 1989 by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee. It was an early form of the internet, and consisted of a global network of interconnected computers.
